Autism Awareness
The 2018 National Autism Spectrum Disorder Surveillance System (NASS) Report estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 66 children in Canada. This includes 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls.
What You Will Learn
Designed for educators, agency clients, parents, siblings and people in the general public, this program will help dispel the myths and misconceptions surrounding people with autism, as well as familiarizing participants with the challenges and opportunities encountered when working or living with people with autism.

About
- The Autism Awareness program will provide participants with theories of the causes and criteria for diagnosis of autism based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5)
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – Analyzing various levels of support required for people with autism based on social communications and restrictive/repetitive behaviours
- Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) – ABA seeks to modify certain parts of the environment for a person with autism in order to change behaviours; strategies include reinforcement, prompting, task analysis, chaining and shaping which are all designed to assist people with autism to learn new behaviours and reach their potential
- Supports that can help with communication such as the use of technology programs, visual strategies, instructional strategies, classroom supports, peer supports, behaviour programming, and action plans for families living with a person with autism
