What You Will Learn

Discover the 4 key sets of skills taught in DBT: Core Mindfulness Skills help people to live more in the present moment and bring an accepting, open attitude to their experiences; Distress Tolerance Skills help people to get through crisis situations without making things worse; Emotional Regulation Skills help people learn more about emotions and healthier ways of managing them; and Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills help people to be more effective in their relationships through assertive communication.

  • Distress Tolerance Skills – coping strategies using distraction, not avoidance
  • R-E-S-T  Learn skills of Relaxing, Evaluating, Setting intentions and Taking action
  • Radical Acceptance – learning to acknowledge the present situation, whatever it is, and trying not to judge the situation or criticize yourself
  • Rediscovering and Rehearsing Your Values – facing obstacles and learning how to turn values into actions
  • Mindfulness Basics – learning how to describe your own emotions by using your Wise Mind
  • Doing What is Effective – doing what is appropriate and necessary in the moment to resolve a problem and reach your goals even if it feels unnatural or uncomfortable
  • Resistances and Hinderances to Mindfulness Practice – how to work wisely with desires, aversions, sleepiness, restlessness and doubt
  • Primary and Secondary Feelings – avoiding taking the path of destructive emotions by creating Opposite Reactions
